Internships
The four-year Pre-Medical program culminates in a senior year internship when students experience the practice of medicine in real life. Seniors leave campus a few times per week to rotate through different aspects of medical practices throughout South Florida. Students experience the practice of medicine in hospitals, operating rooms, and doctors’ offices. There are 35 different specialties in the internship, such as neurosurgery, radiology, pathology, forensic science, and oncology. The connections our seniors make with practicing medical professionals are invaluable and often result in future medical school acceptances and jobs.
Our students have clinical visitation rights at the following institutions:
-
Cleveland Clinic of Weston
-
Memorial Health Systems
-
Broward Health Systems
-
Delray Medical Hospital
-
Caridad Health Center
Societies, Community Service, and Competitions
Societies
Students participate in the Pre-Medical Society, where visiting doctors speak about their specialty. Also, students are trained every year in CPR-First Aid and AED use as well as the Stop the Bleed trauma course. Society meetings are held bi-weekly and agendas include guest speakers in specialized fields, trends in medicine, research, and community outreach programs.
Community Outreach
Holiday Party for Pediatric Cancer Patients
Every year the Pre-Medical Society hosts holiday parties for patients at Broward Health Salah Foundation Children's Hospital. Their passion for contributing and community involvement is reflected in the thousands of dollars raised through local fundraising events, which enabled them to build two new pediatric playrooms at Broward General Hospital.
5K For A Better Day To Benefit Broward Health
Seventeen years ago, American Heritage started its own student-driven 5K. Since its inception, the race has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit the Children's Hospital at Broward Health. Our pre-med students, guided by Director, Dr. Carlos Pulido, spend months planning and operating this sanctioned charity footrace.
