Pre-Medical Program’s Superhero Party Bringing Lots of Smiles to the Salah Pediatric Oncology Unit
The Pre-Medical Program’s Superhero Party Brings Lots of Smiles to the Salah Pediatric Oncology Unit
Superheros are back! It was a Superhero party at the Salah Pediatric Oncology Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center as cosplayers from the Pre-Medical Program visited the pediatric cancer patients. Everyone had a lot of fun and excitement after not being able to organize this event in recent years due to Covid restrictions.
Out of an abundance of caution for the health of the patients, the event was limited to only the officers of both campuses. The night prior to the event, a group of 10 students decorated the auditorium with superhero theme ornaments and lights.
The primary students who organized the event were:
- Lia Lapidot and Allyson Steinberg - Co-Presidents, Palm Beach Campus
- Anita Thereza Lerner and Sofia Toledo - Co-Presidents, Broward Campus
21 of the 30 patients on the Salah Pediatric Oncology unit were able to attend the Superhero Party. The children had a chance to write their wish list for Santa, and the Pre-Medical Program students will work on raising thousands of dollars to make those wishes come true and celebrate with the children at their holiday party in December.
Even though they have been restricted by Covid, the Pre-Medical Program has managed to bring gifts to the patients over the last two years by borrowing ideas from the Trunk or Treat event. Students decorated the trunks of the cars with holiday decorations and the name of the assigned patient and placed their presents in the trunk. The parents would drive by the volunteer parking area and stop at their designated car which held the presents for each child.
The Pre-Medical Program students have proven that their efforts, perseverance, and compassion were stronger than the adverse circumstances, as they have been able to continue bringing some joy to the patients and their families.
The hospital staff, especially Mina Amini, Regional Director of Physician Services, and Heather Havericak, Broward Health Medical Center CEO, have been working with the Pre-Medical Program students and Dr. Carlos Pulido, Pre-Medical Program Director, since the epidemic started to help them continue to reach out to the community. They were the first ones to let them know that the restrictions were re-evaluated and that the students were allowed to restart their events at the hospital again this year.
Little superheroes walk the halls every day at Salah Pediatric Oncology, but they don’t always wear capes.
