Carina Wang, Class of 2023, Wins Prestigious Global Technology Award

Six years ago, after forming a relationship with top technology company LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Mr. Donovan and the members of the robotics team began creating specialty robots, starting with the Autonomous Golf Cart and the Autonomous Agricultural robot leveraging the open source HPCC Systems platform. Following the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Mr. Donovan changed the scope of the relationship to include exploring enhanced security measures on the autonomous vehicle platform. For the past three years, they have been creating a robot that has the capability of following an autonomous path around the school with an array of sensitive cameras and sensors that can detect and identify objects in its surroundings. The goal was to create a prototype that could assist the security team in identifying individuals on our campus by comparing them to a database of approved students and personnel.

Each year Mr. Donovan nominates a student working on our Autonomous Security Robot project to apply for the highly selective HPCC Systems internship with LexisNexis Risk Solutions. This past summer he nominated Carina Wang, and she was accepted into the program. The internship is very rigorous, lasting roughly 8 hours a day for 12 weeks. Carina joined 11 other students from around the US and the globe, most are college students with some working on their graduate degrees. Each intern, as well as other applicants, submits a poster presentation documenting and summarizing their work. Those students’ work is judged by LexisNexis Risk Solutions colleagues and members of the HPCC Systems community.

Winner - 2021 HPCC Systems Poster Contest for Best Poster - Data Analytics: awarded to the student whose poster project demonstrated the best contribution and use to the platform and open source community in the field of data analytics.
