American Heritage Alumna Awarded Prestigious Research Scholarship at MIT

American Heritage Schools alumna Deeksha Kumaresh (Class of 2023), currently an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been awarded the 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. This distinction ranks as the preeminent undergraduate award in the United States for the fields of natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation designed this program to identify and support undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional potential for leadership in scientific research. The selection process is highly competitive; out of an estimated 5,000 top-tier college sophomores and juniors nominated by universities across the nation, only 454 scholars received the award this year.

During her tenure at American Heritage Schools, Kumaresh was a standout leader within the specialized Pre-Law and Pre-Med/Pre-Engineering research tracks. Under the direct mentorship of the American Heritage research faculty, she conducted advanced scientific studies and advanced to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), establishing a foundation in laboratory methodology before being accepted to MIT.

  • Deeksha Kumaresh – Biological Engineering Major (American Heritage Class of 2023)

    • Research Focus: Conducts research at the Hammond Lab within the MIT Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, specializing in the self-assembly of polymeric nanomaterials and multifunctional materials with highly controlled architectures.
    • Career Objective: Pursuing an MD/PhD to lead a bioengineering research laboratory focused on predicting the efficacy and side effects of cancer therapies through systems-level computational and preclinical biological models.

Kumaresh is currently mentored at MIT by Dr. Paula Hammond, the Institute Professor and vice provost for faculty.
