Theatre Students Shine On Stage and Backstage in “The Role of Della”
The 2024 fall theatre season at American Heritage Schools, Palm Beach Campus, brought exciting opportunities for students to showcase their theatrical talents, both on stage and behind the scenes, with the performance of The Role of Della by John J. Wooten. This contemporary one-act play, directed by the school’s new Upper School Theatre Director, Monica Andrews, offers a glimpse into the competitive world of auditions, blending humor and intensity as the characters vie for a coveted role.
As the new theatre director, Ms. Monica Andrews selected The Role of Della for the fall production, a play that would allow students to explore their range as performers and technicians. “In educational theatre, I find it important to select material that will allow students to shine, whether in a performance role or backstage position, while challenging them to try new things,” Andrews shared.
The Role of Della is a perfect fit for this objective. The story follows an ambitious young actress trying to win over a sarcastic, hard-to-please director, a situation all too familiar for students who may one day face similar pressures in real-life auditions. The play's comedic yet high-stakes tone serves as a vehicle for the students to push themselves, make bold choices, and ultimately grow as theatre artists.
The cast was divided into two rotating teams, each set to perform on different nights. Each of these talented students brought their own flair to the roles, embodying the challenges and triumphs of the characters in unique ways.
While the actors captivated audiences on stage, a dedicated team of students worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the production to life. Jonathan Jacknow served as stage manager, skillfully coordinating the technical aspects of the show. Lighting technicians Sophia Luque and Jack O'Donnell ensured that every moment on stage was illuminated to perfection, while sound technician Simone Zickl made sure the audience could fully experience the dialogue and sound effects that added depth to the performance.
Additionally, the run crew, consisting of Olivia Arpaia, Jade Keskinen, and Valentina Patrignani, played a critical role in managing the set changes and ensuring the show ran smoothly. These students demonstrated professionalism and commitment, proving that the work backstage is just as essential to a successful production as the performances on stage.
