JH Drama Students Named Finalists in One-Minute Play Contest

2026PBOne-MinutePlayContestHERO

The American Heritage Schools, Palm Beach Campus, Fine Arts Program recently celebrated a significant milestone in creative writing and theater. Two of our Junior High students, Nate Colton (8th grade) and Aashi Shah (6th grade), were officially selected as finalists for the Palm Beach Dramaworks One-Minute Play Contest. This achievement placed our students among a very small group of young writers recognized for their storytelling and dramatic scripts.

The competition was incredibly rigorous this year, with a total of 297 plays submitted by students from across the region. From that large pool of entries, judges chose only 40 finalists to move forward in the process. Having two students from the Junior High Fine Arts program earn spots as finalists is a major accomplishment for our Drama and English Departments.

The One-Minute Play Contest is designed to give teenagers a platform to write about subjects that carry personal meaning. It also encourages educators to bring playwriting into the classroom as a core part of the literacy and arts curriculum.

As finalists, Nate and Aashi now wait to see if they will be among the 20 winners selected to have their work published and performed. Those chosen students will be invited to:

  • Participate in the professional rehearsal process.
  • Work alongside professional playwrights and directors.
  • See their scripts brought to life by professional actors on the Palm Beach Dramaworks stage this April.

This contest allows students to learn how a script evolves from a written draft into a live performance. By working with industry professionals, Nate and Aashi are gaining a unique perspective on the collaboration required in professional theater. We are incredibly proud of their creativity and look forward to the final results!
