Pre-Med Student Jacob Daniel Makes History at International Thoracic Surgery Conference, First Author on Research

Jacob Daniel, a dedicated student in the Pre-Professional Medical Program at American Heritage Schools, Palm Beach Campus, has achieved a historic milestone in the medical research community. Jacob recently presented groundbreaking research at the 105th annual meeting of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS) in Seattle, Washington, becoming the first high school student ever to do so at this highly prestigious international conference.

Working closely with Dr. Tom Nguyen, Chief Executive Officer and Chief of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute (MCVI), Jacob contributed to a vital research project titled, "Understanding our Thoracic Surgery Workforce: Who, What, and Where we Practice." This important study, sponsored by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS), involved examining demographic data of cardiothoracic surgeons who undertook board certification examinations over the past six years. The team successfully identified statistically significant trends regarding age, gender, subspecialization, geographic area of practice, and type of practice. The findings from this research are poised to help policymakers shape the future of the cardiothoracic surgery specialty, particularly concerning the recruitment and training of the next generation of surgeons.

Jacob played an essential role throughout the research process. He was instrumental in gathering information, creating graphs for data visualization, analyzing complex data, and co-authoring the abstract. He also provided significant contributions to the manuscript, which is currently under review for publication with Jacob slated to be the first author, an exceptional accomplishment for a student at any level, let alone high school.

Jacob took the podium at the AATS meeting, which is considered the most distinguished international gathering for cardiothoracic surgeons. His presentation of the abstract was met with commendation from numerous leading figures in cardiac and thoracic surgery, who praised both the substance of the research and Jacob's presentation style. Attendees included luminaries such as Dr. Cameron Wright (Chief Thoracic Surgery, Harvard; Executive Director of ABTS), Dr. Elizabeth Stephens (Congenital Heart Surgeon, Mayo Clinic), Dr. Malcolm DeCamp (Chief Cardiothoracic Surgery, Wisconsin; Chair of Examination ABTS), and Dr. Tom Nguyen.
