Oriane the Dragon, by the Numbers:

  • Height: 7.5 Feet
  • Materials: 3 Harry Potter Books (thousands of hand-cut scales)
  • Finish: Hand-aged and gilded in 24k-style gold leaf
  • Features: Color-changing LED eyes with "following" pupils

The Lower School Media Center at American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, just added a new legend to its collection. Suspended in among a cascade of fairy-lit stars, a life-size dragon named Oriane has officially emerged from the pages of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

This 7.5-foot-tall sculpture is the work of world-class artist Eileen Bos. Known for her transition from intricate chocolate artistry to massive, non-edible sculptures, Bos hand-sculpted every detail of this piece. The dragon’s exterior consists of thousands of individual scales meticulously cut from three different Harry Potter books. Each scale was hand-aged, airbrushed, and gilded in gold to give the creature a majestic, weathered look.

A Perfect Fit for the Treehouse Library

This installation is the final piece of the puzzle for the recently renovated Media Center. Following the 2023 transformation led by artists Kevin Hale and Jonathan Reid, the library now resembles a "treehouse in the sky." With murals of waterfalls and a reading room built inside a giant tree, the addition of a book-born dragon completes the immersive experience.

The library was designed to be a place where children feel they are entering a dream. Principal Lauren Johnston noted that the goal was to create a space where students cannot wait to pick out a book. By bringing characters like Oriane to life, the school provides a physical bridge between the printed page and a child’s imagination.

From Cake Toppers to 7-Foot Dragons

Eileen Bos brought a unique set of skills to this project. Her background in the baking industry, where she crafted custom sculptures for TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, taught her the resilience needed for complex builds. After shifting to book sculptures and large-scale window displays, she mastered the art of "sculpting a new path" using unconventional materials.

Oriane, whose name means "sunrise" or "gold," serves as a symbol of creativity for the students. In a space built from industrial materials transformed into nature-themed art, this dragon proves that stories are not just meant to be read; they are meant to be experienced.
