Fine Arts Scholarships

Apply now for a Fine Arts Scholarship at American Heritage Schools and elevate your talent in Band, Orchestra, Dance, Musical Theater, or Theater Technology, while leading your peers both in and out of the classroom.

Fine Arts Scholarships are designed for the student who is dedicated to their craft and possibly planning for a career in the arts.

Granted to incoming Grade 9 students.
Recipient's schedule will include two electives, as assigned, in the Fine Arts.
Students on scholarship will be expected to be leaders in their discipline, both in and out of the classroom.
After-school performances and competitions will be required as part of the scholarship contract.

Scholarships are granted based on individual auditions in the following five disciplines:

Band
Orchestra
Dance
Musical Theater
Theater Technology

Unfortunately, we do not offer scholarships for piano, guitar or visual arts at this time.

Application Process

NOTE: Any incoming Grade 9 student may audition but, to accept a Fine Arts Scholarship, a student must first be accepted into the school.

Step 1: Contact Admissions

Parents of interested students are required to call admissions to speak to an Admissions Director regarding their child's eligibility. Admissions Directors can be reached at (954) 472-0022 ext. 1. After speaking to an Admissions Director, parents may proceed with an application.

Note: Any incoming Grade 9 student may audition but to accept a fine arts scholarship a student must first be accepted into the school.

Step 3: Pre-screening / Registration

In order to be eligible for an audition, students are required to submit all admissions requirements first.

Pre-screen videos must be submitted via email to finearts.broward@ahschool.com between September 1st - January 9, 2025. The last day for a pre-screen video to be submitted is no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on January 9th. Incomplete or insufficient pre-screening materials may affect consideration for an invitation to an in-person audition.

Applicants selected for an in-person audition will receive information via email in January 2025.
Pre-screening decisions are final.
Applicants who are not invited to the in-person auditions will not be permitted to schedule an in-person audition.
Applicants who are invited to an in-person audition are required to attend a live audition in order to be considered for scholarship.
An invitation to an in-person audition is not an offer of scholarship.

All pre-screening videos should contain the following material, in the order listed:

Introductory Section:
A brief close-up shot of the student (face or 1⁄2 body), in which the student clearly states his or her full name, current Middle School and a brief history of previous training.
Technique/ Performance Section
Please see your specific genre for more details about your audition.

Make sure your video is one continuous video with no edits or cuts of any kind. Please review your pre-screening video before submitting it to be sure that you can be clearly seen throughout the duration of the video.

Registration for Technical Theatre Interview

In order to schedule a Technical Theatre Interview, students must submit information found under Technical Theatre. After reading the information, the committee will select candidates for an in-person interview. All candidates, receiving an interview or not, will be contacted.

Disclaimer

All students selected as finalists for the Fine Arts Scholarship, are required to take the admissions test in order to be admitted into the school. If your child is also planning on taking the Academic Scholarship Test, they will not be required to take a separate admissions test. The Academic Scholarship Test will fulfill the admissions testing requirement. If your child is a current American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, student seeking a Fine Arts Scholarship, you do not need to submit an additional application.

Audition Requirements

The last day for a pre-screen video to be submitted is no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on January 9th. Incomplete or insufficient pre-screening materials may affect consideration for an invitation to an in-person audition.

Finalists in-person auditions will be between January 14th - January 16th, 2025, at American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus.

Band

Students interested in auditioning for Band should prepare based on the below criteria.

Accepted Band instruments

Baritone/Euphonium
Bassoon
Clarinet
Flute
French Horn
Oboe
Saxophone
Snare drum including all of the mallet or keyboard instruments (bells, xylophone, vibes and marimba)
Trombone
Trumpet
Tuba

Pre-screening videos should contain the following material, in the order listed:

12 Major Scales in two minutes or less
Chromatic Scale extending the range of the instrument
One piece of choice from the FBA Solo and Ensemble List. Accompaniment Suggested.
Sight Reading (in-person audition only)

Woodwinds and Brass

Dance

Pre-screening videos should contain the following material, in the order listed:

1. Technique Section (to musical accompaniment):

● Barre
- Pliés in 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th include grande plié and a port de bras
- Tendu from fifth position en croix
- Grand adagio that includes développés en croix with a balance at the end

● Center
- Pirouette en dehors and en dedans
- Petit allegro including changeménts and assemblés
- Grand allegro traveling from the corner

*Male dancers, please include a simple tour en l’air

2. Performance Section:

A prepared solo of your own genre choice. The solo may be original choreography or from standard repertory. It should demonstrate the dancer’s artistic qualities and flow of movement, and should be approximately two minutes in length, no longer. Please state the title of the solo, the genre and the choreographer. No additional costume should be worn.
Note: pointe work is NOT a part of the audition process.

Clothing Requirement

Female dancers: Must be in a plain black leotard and pink tights with pink ballet shoes. No skirts, no loose fitting tee shirts, no leg warmers, and no costumes. Hair should be in a neat ballet bun.

Male dancers: Must be in all black dance attire and black ballet shoes.

Musical Theatre / Voice

Students interested in auditioning for a Musical Theatre Scholarship should be prepared to act and sing based on the below criteria:

Vocal Requirements

Two 32 bar cuts of songs of contrasting nature from the Musical Theatre Cannon (one ballad & one uptempo), a verse and a chorus (or roughly one minute). Choose songs that show off your range to the best of your ability!
Required accompaniment must be on a CD or flash drive. You may also email your accompaniment prior to the audition.

Acting Requirements

Two one-minute contemporary monologues of contrasting nature and age appropriate content (one dramatic & one comedic).
All monologue material should be found from published plays.
Contemporary plays are works from the 1970's to present day.

Orchestra

Pre-screening videos should contain the following material, in the order listed:

Accepted Orchestra Instruments

● Violin

● Viola

● Cello

● Bass

Violin, Viola and Cello Requirements

*NO Accompaniment. A single level of a concerto is considered to be one piece.

2 prepared pieces of contrasting styles – must be at least grade level 4. No Pop Music.
Your choice of 3 of the following major Scales and Arpeggios in 3 octaves G, D. A, C, Bb, F, Eb; MEMORIZED.
Sight reading (in-person audition only)

Bass Requirements

*NO Accompaniment. A single level of a concerto is considered to be one piece.

2 prepared pieces of contrasting styles – must be at least grade level 4. No Pop Music.
Your choice of 2 of the following major Scales and Arpeggios in 2 octaves G, D, A, C, Bb, F, Eb. MEMORIZED.
Sight reading (in-person audition only)

Technical Theatre

Students interested in a Technical Theatre Scholarship should have experience in one or more of the disciplines: lighting, sound experience, set design, set construction scenic/set painting and/or stage management.

Prior to an interview, students must submit the following:

Resume including student's first and last name that details any and all things involving art, show production, design, volunteering at a theatre, professional experience, etc.
A letter of reference from a teacher or someone in the technical theatre field.
