Senior Jack Ryan Wins Prestigious Carbonell Awards Scholarship

Senior Jack Ryan has been honored as a recipient of the esteemed 2025 Jack Zink Memorial Scholarship from the Carbonell Awards. This scholarship recognizes talented graduating high school seniors from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties who demonstrate talent, experience, and a commitment to either theater or journalism.
Jack Bear Ryan, a senior at American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, has cultivated a deep passion for musical theater since the age of nine, when he first appeared in Annie Jr. A previous winner of the 2024 South Florida Cappies’ Lead Actor in a Male Role in a Musical, Jack also serves as the president of our high school’s acapella choir. His musical interests extend to playing the keyboard, composing orchestral and 8-bit music, and exploring music theory and computer programming.
"Storytelling through drama and music is my language—whether expressed through characters on stage or musical notes on a page—and theater has allowed me to shape my ideas into an immersive experience for others," shared Jack. "Thank you so much to the Carbonell Awards."
The annual Carbonell Scholarship honors the memory of Jack Zink (1947-2008), a significant figure in South Florida's entertainment journalism for over three decades. Zink was a respected entertainment editor, columnist, critic, and reporter for major South Florida newspapers and the founder of the Carbonell Awards.
Each scholarship recipient, including Jack, will receive $2,000 upon enrolling in college to pursue a degree in either theater or journalism. The 48th annual Carbonell Awards Ceremony, during which Jack and the other scholarship winners will be celebrated, will take place on Monday, November 17, at the University Theatre at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
The Carbonell Awards support the growth of professional theater in South Florida by celebrating artists, offering educational scholarships like the Jack Zink Memorial Scholarship, and fostering appreciation for local theater achievements.
