Fifth State Championship for Moot Court Team
The Moot Court Team from American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, successfully defended their championship title at the 2023-2024 Florida Bar High School Appellate Brief Writing & Moot Court Competition in Tallahassee. This championship victory represents the fifth consecutive title for the Pre-law program’s Moot Court team! The event, organized by The Florida Bar Law Related Education Committee and Appellate Practice Section, provided an immersive platform for students to engage with appellate law, culminating in an intense statewide showdown in front of the seven justices of the Florida Supreme Court.
Juniors Matthew Rodriguez and Jacob Zeng emerged as the state champions after navigating through rigorous rounds of brief writing and oral arguments. Guided by attorneys Nikki Laurie and Laura Burkhalter, the duo showcased exceptional legal aptitude and eloquence, impressing all seven Florida Supreme Court justices with their prowess in the final round. Rodriguez's outstanding oratory skills also earned him the title of Best Oralist in the finals, further solidifying their remarkable victory.
Rodriguez and Zeng exhibited exceptional teamwork and skill as they defended their title as state champions from the previous year. The dynamic duo also clinched the Best Brief award for their appellate brief.
Laura Burkhalter, an esteemed attorney who has coached the last five state title-winning moot court teams, led the American Heritage Schools Broward team with dedication and expertise. Assisted by attorney Cynthia Sahn, Burkhalter's mentorship and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the success of the school's moot court program.
