Emerging Journalist of the Year and Back-to-Back Best News Illustrator Named

The Journalism Program from American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, achieved exceptional results at the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) State Convention. The annual event brought together more than 1,500 student journalists from across Florida to participate in workshops, networking, and professional-level competitions. Our students earned some of the most prestigious individual honors in the state, securing their status as top young media professionals.

The FSPA recognizes the "best of the best" through its Journalist of the Year awards. This year, two Broward Campus students received major statewide titles:

  • Daniel Harper (Grade 10): Earned the Florida Emerging Journalist of the Year Award. This honor is given to the single best sophomore or junior journalist in the state.
  • Alina Sukhovskaya (Grade 12): Won the Florida Best News Illustrator of the Year award. This marked Alina's second consecutive time winning this title, a rare achievement that solidified her reputation as a leading visual storyteller in student media.

In addition to individual portfolio awards, our students competed in fast-paced "on-the-spot" contests that tested their ability to produce high-quality media under tight deadlines. Arsh Lalani was a key member of the team that won the best newsmagazine spread competition. This event required students to design and lay out a professional-grade spread on-site, competing against schools from all over Florida.

The 2026 State Convention featured over 70 informational sessions led by industry professionals and university professors. Students participated in intensive training for tools like InDesign and Premiere while networking with peers and media experts.

The success of Daniel, Alina, and Arsh reflected the professional standards maintained by the Broward Campus journalism department. We congratulate our award winners for their dedication to accurate, creative, and impactful journalism.
