Introducing the New Junior High Environmental Class!

American Heritage Schools, Palm Beach Campus, is excited to announce a new elective designed for junior high students—the Junior High Environmental class. This innovative course, taught by science teacher Ashley Ventrella, gives students the unique opportunity to delve into the wonders of South Florida’s environment, with a particular focus on the Everglades. Building on the success of an environmental course introduced to Lower School students by science teacher Leslee Hoepner-Scruggs, this new class, now tailored for older students eager to take on more advanced concepts and hands-on learning experiences, extends the school’s commitment to environmental education.

The Junior High Environmental class aims to deepen students' understanding of the ecosystems that make South Florida so unique, with the Everglades serving as the course’s central focus. Known as one of the most remarkable wetlands in the world, the Everglades faces numerous environmental pressures, including issues related to wildlife preservation, water management, and the impact of human activity. Through this course, students will gain a comprehensive view of these challenges and actively participate in discussions and projects aimed at finding sustainable solutions.

The curriculum emphasizes immersive, hands-on learning. Students will have opportunities to investigate the complex dynamics of local wildlife habitats, explore the roles of different species within the ecosystem, and understand how water quality and flow impact the health of the Everglades. Beyond the classroom, the course will feature field trips to nearby natural sites, giving students a firsthand experience of the Everglades’ beauty and fragility. These excursions will allow students to observe ecosystems up close, analyze water samples, and participate in guided discussions about conservation efforts led by local environmental experts.

In addition to fieldwork, students will engage in collaborative projects where they can apply their newfound knowledge to real-world scenarios. These projects will cover a range of topics, from restoration efforts for native species to strategies for reducing pollution in South Florida’s waterways. Working in groups, students will research specific challenges facing the Everglades, brainstorm innovative solutions, and present their findings to classmates and faculty. This emphasis on teamwork and presentation helps students develop communication and critical thinking skills, essential tools for any budding environmental steward.

The Junior High Environmental class not only educates students about environmental science but also fosters a sense of responsibility and empowerment. By learning about the impact humans have on natural habitats and examining ways to mitigate these effects, students come away with a greater appreciation for the role they play in protecting the planet. “Our goal is to help students not only understand the environment but to feel inspired to make a difference,” says Mrs. Ventrella. “Through this class, we’re giving them the tools and knowledge to become the next generation of environmental stewards.”

As students in this new elective immerse themselves in the study of local ecosystems, they also join a growing community of American Heritage students dedicated to environmental awareness. With hands-on experiences, collaborative projects, and a focus on one of the world’s most endangered wetlands, the Junior High Environmental class promises to be an inspiring and impactful addition to the science curriculum at American Heritage Schools, Palm Beach Campus.
