Is your child interested in a career in medicine or biomedical engineering? The Pre-Med Program and Biomedical Engineering Program at American Heritage Schools are both designed to teach students the basics of these professions and give them a leg up when it’s time to get in to the right college.
We discuss what these Pre-Professional Programs offer and how they can help students achieve their college and career dreams.
Pre-Med Program
The Pre-Med Program at American Heritage Schools was our first pre-professional program. Students are challenged with a college-level curriculum that will introduce and prepare them for a variety of careers in the medical field. All classes are taught by practicing physicians, surgeons, and specialists.
Courses include:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Biology & Molecular Biology
- Chemistry & Organic Chemistry
- Forensic Science
- Medical Embryology
- Medical Terminology
- Pathology
- Physics
Pre-med internships
Students in the Pre-Med Program will experience different areas of medicine by participating in a series of internships. Internships take place in a variety of medical settings, including private practices, hospitals, medical centers, diagnostic centers, labs, and operating rooms. Students can choose from among 35 different specialties, including cardiology, neurosurgery, radiology, oncology, and forensic science.
Competitions and recognition
Students enrolled in the Pre-Med Program can join HOSA Future Health Professionals Association. This international organization promotes career opportunities in the healthcare industry while enhancing the delivery of healthcare for patients.
HOSA hosts several Competitive Events for those involved in healthcare instruction, related job training, and HOSA-related activities.
Community service
Pre-med students also take part in service projects that benefit deserving families in the community. Annual events include a holiday party for pediatric cancer patients at Broward Health Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital and the 5K For A Better Day race to benefit the Broward Health Children’s Hospital.
Pre-Biomedical Engineering Program
Biomedical Engineering (bioengineering) combines principles of engineering, biology, and healthcare. Biomedical Engineers work with doctors, therapists, and researchers to develop cutting-edge devices, equipment, and systems to help patients with a variety of clinical problems.
Some of the technologies include:
- Prosthetics for amputees
- Surgical devices (robotic & laser surgery systems)
- Vital sign monitoring systems
- Implanted devices (insulin pumps, pacemakers, artificial organs)
- Imaging technology (ultrasound, X-ray, MRI)
- Diagnostic equipment
- Therapeutic equipment (dialysis machines)
- Physical therapy devices
- Radiation therapy devices
Our Pre-Biomedical Engineering Program features a multidisciplinary STEM curriculum that demonstrates how disciplines like biology, physiology, anatomy, and engineering can be applied to healthcare. Classes are taught by working professionals, including doctors, engineers, and other industry leaders.
Courses include:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Biology
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemistry
- Embryology
- Intro to Engineering Design
- Medical Terminology
- Physics
Bioengineering Internships
Students in the Pre-Biomedical Engineering Program will have the opportunity to participate in a series of internships to learn more about various medical technologies. They will work with local bioengineering firms, medical offices, and engineering firms that will expose them to the different disciplines and devices associated with biomedical engineering.
Pre-professional societies and community projects
Students in the Pre-Biomedical Engineering Program will be able to join the Pre-Med and Pre-Engineering Societies. Membership in these societies allows them to enter competitions and make connections with students and professionals in our community and around the country.
Like the Pre-Med Program, students will take place in several community projects, such as the holiday party for pediatric oncology patients. Students will also work to develop and design medical equipment that can be used in real-life situations. Devices that our students have worked on include enhanced wheelchairs and 3D printing medical tools.
