Navigating the Bumpy Road of College Scholarships

As you probably know, paying for your child's college education is expensive. Even with in-state tuition and student loans, the cost can be staggering. Fortunately, there are many scholarship and grant opportunities out there. Universities award some, but there are also private scholarships awarded by businesses, charities, and organizations. Unlike student loans, scholarships do not have to be repaid.

We have put together this parent's guide to help you.

What kinds of college scholarships are available?

There are many types of scholarships, some of which will pay the entire cost of tuition or give a one-time award. Scholarships can be merit-based, meaning the money is awarded based on a pre-determined set of standards. "Merit scholarships might be awarded based on academic achievement or a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, or interest," according to StudentAid.gov.

Your child could be awarded a scholarship for sports, music, or a particular discipline such as science, math, or engineering. Children of active-duty military personnel or veterans can also find special scholarships and grants.

What is the difference between college scholarships and grants?

The two are similar. Scholarships are generally merit-based, and grants are awarded based on financial need. Grants are awarded at the federal, state, or college level.

For more information on federal grants, check out the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid program.

The best places to find college scholarships

One of the best places to start looking for scholarships is by contacting the student financial aid office at the college your child wants or plans to attend. Universities have a lot of resources and information available. They will also be able to give advice on how to apply. High school guidance counselors are also an excellent resource to utilize.

How to apply for college scholarships

The first thing to do is look at the deadlines for when the application needs to be submitted. Some scholarships are awarded as early as a year before your child plans to attend college, so it is best for your child to begin the search during his or her junior year. Others are awarded during the summer after graduation.

As for how to apply, the requirements are determined by whoever is sponsoring the scholarship. Read the website carefully to make sure you and your child understand the requirements and all elements needed to submit.

Applications can include written essays, videos, answering questions, and other tasks. Your child might also need to submit evidence of grades or community service, and even go through an audition process if the scholarship is for something like music, theater, dance, or art.

Paying for your child's college education is something that requires careful planning and saving. Scholarships and grants can help ease the burden. This guide will help you navigate the waters of scholarships to give your child the best chance at a bright future.
