How can students enter?
The journey to becoming a National Merit Scholar begins with the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Other requirements include that the student:
- Must be enrolled as a high school student

How do you win a National Merit Scholarship?

- Commended: About two-thirds of the qualifying students (around 50,000) receive letters of recognition but do not advance to receive a National Merit Scholarship. However, they can qualify for Special Scholarships from corporations and businesses.
- Semifinalists: National Merit Semifinalists are the top scorers in each state. Approximately 1% of test-takers advance to this stage. They are notified of their status through their high schools in September of their senior year. To advance to the finalist round, they must complete a detailed scholarship application, including academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and an essay. Finalists are selected based on this comprehensive application.
Scholarship Opportunities
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation offers a variety of scholarships to finalists, including National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships. These scholarships can provide significant financial support for higher education.
- National Merit $2,500 Scholarships – Single-payments of $2,500 are given on a state-by-state basis. A committee made up of college admission officers and high school counselors chooses these winners.
- Corporate-Sponsored Scholarship Awards – Corporations or businesses give these scholarships to children of their employees, youth in their communities, or Finalists who have career plans in the company’s field. These can be either a one-time award or renewable for four years.
- College-Sponsored Scholarship Awards – Officials from the sponsor colleges select winners from among the Finalists. They are renewable for up to four years.
Another 1,100 students may receive Special Scholarships from corporations or businesses.
