Upper School (Grades 7 - 12)

Academics

In our upper school, we provide much more than the basics, with elective courses ranging from art and drama to foreign languages and journalism.
Grades 7 & 8 are required to take courses in these subject areas: reading, English, math, science, social studies and enrichments.

Grades 9 - 12 must meet credit requirements in reading, English, math, science, social studies, PE, computer technology and fine arts. In addition, high school students may choose from a variety of elective subjects including art, vocal and instrumental music, drama, foreign language, yearbook, physical education and additional computer offerings.

The goal of the Academy program is to allow students to transfer into a more traditional classroom atmosphere at our American Heritage School. In grades seven through twelve, students enter the Heritage program on a course by course basis as their subject mastery and confidence grow. Administrators and teachers from both schools, together with parents, determine the right time for a move into the Heritage program.

Opportunities for Growth

The development of social and leadership skills is aided by participation in our extensive activities program. In junior and senior high school, a year-round variety of clubs and activities aids students in becoming well-rounded individuals. Students may participate in music activities including band or chorus, drama productions, modern language or other subject area clubs, or yearbook. Our Fine Arts program has won awards on the local, state and national levels. Students are required to perform community service hours each year.

College Bound

100% of American Academy graduates go on to college. We have a full time guidance counselor to help students and parents in the college selection and admission process. Students benefit from individualized counseling sessions in which they are advised on course selection, college search and admission requirements. To assist in college selection, the guidance office has a computer mini-lab in which students may "visit" colleges and universities around the world on the Internet. We strongly recommend that college bound students include two years of the same foreign language, Algebra I and II and Geometry in their course selections.

Athletics

We offer over twenty-five teams in twelve sports for boys and girls, grades 7-12, in our Academy and Heritage programs. Our coaches provide a high quality level of instruction in all sports. Most importantly, we have a no-cut policy on all our athletic teams. Each child who comes out for a sport is allowed to make his or her own contribution to the team and to benefit from the experience of team membership.
