LEGAL PROFESSIONS PROGRAM

For High School Students Considering a Career in Law...

American Heritage School is pleased to offer to students the Honors Pre-Law Program. The program challenges ninth through twelfth grade students who have an interest in legal studies and encourages students to consider law as a potential profession. The program is taught at the honors level and exposes students to unique and challenging courses not usually offered at high schools. In addition, the Honors Pre-Law Program emphasizes extra training in writing and communication skills. These skills are important for all students, but essential to those interested in the practice of law. In addition to course work, there are required internships which are arranged through the prosecutor’s office, public defender’s office, and/or judges and private attorneys.

Internship Program
Prelaw Club for Students
To give students additional exposure to the legal profession, an internship is to be completed during the last semester of the senior year. The required internship includes observations of attorneys and judges in their own work environments. Students have the opportunity to intern with prosecutors, public defenders, judges and attorneys in private practice.

The purpose of the internship is to give students a realistic view of the legal system and help them to determine their own career choices. One-half credit is earned through successful completion of the internship. Students are given supplementary assignments and are supervised by an advisor in the Legal Studies Program.

Students taking Legal Studies courses also participate in the Prelaw Club designed to provide them with additional understanding of the American legal system. Guest lecturers include judges and prosecutors, civil and criminal attorneys, medical examiners and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. These members of the legal community address topics such as the role of litigators, presenting evidence, selecting members of a jury, and the use of technology in criminal and civil cases.
