Howard Finkelstein may be best known for his twice weekly segment, Help Me Howard, which airs on channel 7, WSVN. A committed consumer advocate, Finkelstein helps people in the community by answering questions that deal with specific legal issues, ranging from employment matters to consumer problems. As a legal analyst for WSVN, he has also presented gavel to gavel coverage of the more controversial court cases of the past decade.
Finkelstein was the Chief Assistant Public Defender for Broward County for several years and moved up to Chief Public Defender after running for that office unopposed. Lesser known is the fact that he is a zealous advocate for the mentally ill and mentally retarded. He was instrumental in getting the Legislature to provide funding for the C.O.U.R.T. Project. The money built five cottages that provide shelter and treatment for indigent homeless and mentally ill defendants referred from Broward’s Mental Health Court. The Mental Health Court was Mr. Finkelstein’s idea, and since being implemented in 1997 has become a national model for other jurisdictions.
