American Heritage/Academy Computer Expansion

"American Heritage and Academy are dedicated to providing a learning environment equipped for the 21st century."

Ready for the 21st Century

The Upper School and Lower School computer labs have the latest eMacs. Together the labs provide 120 student computers and the latest technologically advanced teacher aids.

Each Upper School classroom has Macintosh Emac computer which is networked school-wide and linked to the Internet for research. Teachers will use this computer for recording attendance and grades and for E-mail among faculty and offices.

As the Imacs are rolled out of the labs, they are being installed in the preschool to update the technology available there on a daily basis. Our Lower School teachers integrate this technology into their lesson plans for language arts, math, social studies and science. There is an ongoing review of software available by grade level by both teachers and computer specialists at our school. Book companies are now making more software available that is compatible and relevant to the texts used by students. All elementary classrooms are equipped with seven student computers stations. At American Academy, each classroom has eMac computers installed for first through sixth grades. In addition, the Academy reading lab is equipped with eMacs and Imacs for individual tutoring.

The computer graphics lab is on par with such labs usually found at the university level. It has ten eMac computers all running on a OS X server. At each station is a graphics tablet, zip drive and a 17" high resolution monitor. Students are instructed in the art of digital compositioning using programs such as the latest Adobe Suite software package. The students view hard copies of their designs using the color laser printer and wax plotter. The printer is capable of printing out oversize art work.

As important as the latest hardware and software is, it cannot be used to its potential without the instruction of knowledgeable, highly qualified teaching professionals. Our computer department is staffed by dedicated instructors with years of experience teaching Macintosh applications.

In addition, over the past two years, all classroom teachers have been given the opportunity to attend inservice workshops offered right here on campus to attain or strengthen their own computer base of knowledge.
