Juniors/Seniors Service Requirements
&NJHS/NHS Candidates

No expensive tag,

Mission Statement All juniors and seniors are required to donate fifteen hours of their personal time to helping others in their school or community during each of their last two years of high school.
Time Frame Juniors should perform their service hours from the end of their sophomore year to the last day of school their junior year. Seniors have from the end of their junior year to May 28th of their senior year to complete their service hours
School Service Students may volunteer at the school by tutoring peers, by donating blood, by helping with summer camp, sporting events, theater productions, etc. Students may be eligible to do school service in other areas approved by the Service Committee. All service hours earned from grades 9 - 12 count toward the 75 hours needed for Florida Bright Futures Scholarships and may be used for the graduation requirement, resumes, and college applications.
Graduation Recognition Documentation must be on file in the Guidance Office by May 14th for seniors’ efforts to be recognized at graduation. Seniors who perform 50 hours of service in their senior year may wear a gold cord at graduation. Seniors who perform 75 or more hours of service in their senior year may wear a black and gold cord at graduation

Guidelines
It is the student’s responsibility to adhere to the following service guidelines:
  • Service must take place in the school or community at large.
  • Service must be performed for a non-profit organization or a school / hospital / retirement community.
  • Student must perform volunteer services on his / her own time.
  • No compensation (money, gifts or benefits) may be received by the student.

What To Do:
  • Choose a service project that meets the above guidelines. Volunteer opportunities may be found on the Guidance page or by going directly to the web site www.volunteerbroward.org or the web site www.servenet.org. Seasonal opportunities are mentioned in daily announcements.
  • Perform the service. Represent American Heritage positively.
  • Complete the 2-ply service form and have it signed by an authorized person.
  • Submit the service form to a school secretary. (Only completed forms will be accepted. Additional documentation may be attached).
  • Wait for the secretary to initial the form and return a copy to you

Service That Does Not Count
  • Service performed for a student’s family
  • Service performed for a profit making organization, except for institutions like schools, hospitals or retirement communities
  • Volunteer work done to promote a particular religious or political point of view or person
  • Rehearsal and practice times
  • Participation in performances, festivals or competitions unless:
    • -student participation is voluntary and
    • -the performance meets an identified community service need and
    • -there is no admission fee collected or donation accepted and
    • -the performance does not promote the sponsoring organization and
    • -neither the student organization nor the sponsoring organization receives any form of payment
  • Fund raising, except for specific, pre-approved non-profit charities
  • Service rendered as a prerequisite for employment
  • Attendance at self-improvement workshops or conferences
  • Service performed as a result of disciplinary action issued by the school or courts

Students should refer to the “Guidelines” and the “Service That Does Not Count” sections in this flyer and to the back of the student handbook for special requirements necessary for induction into these honor societies
