8th Grade Planning for College
Use your Daily Planner:
- Record class assignments
- Keep track of important deadlines
- Develop good study habits
- Manage your time by planning your schedule
Get involved in extracurricular activities:
- Pursue your interests and devlop talents
- Check out our website for a list of sports and clubs
- Listen for announcements and look for posted signs regarding meetings
Review National Honor Society requirements:
- Consult student handbook for semesters used to compute GPA
- Attain Scholarship (3.8 cumulative GPA)
- Possess outstanding character
- Develop leadership qualities
- Perform Service (min 25 community service hours in the previous 12 months)
Perform community service:
- Perform min of 20 hours community service during 8th grade
- Keep record for college applications, school, scholarships and special recognition
- Review Community Service Bulletin for qualification guidelines, suggested non-profit, and submission deadlines.
Spring Semester
College Planning Meeting:
- Parents are strongly recommended to attend College Planning Meeting with your assigned Guidance Counselor
Review high school graduation requirements for American Heritage:
- Four years of English
- Three years of Social Studies (world history, American history, American government, economics)
- Three years of Mathematics (Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, minimum)
- Three years of Science (biology required)
- Two years of the same Foreign Language
- One semester of Computer applications
- One semester of Fine Arts
- One semester of Physical Education/weight lifting
- # of electives 6 elective credits (including World Geog. as a mandatory elective)
- 24 credits total
Review academic requirements for college:
- Public four year universities in Florida - 19 academic credits required
- Specific Colleges - check requirements online
- Selective colleges - take as many honors and/or advanced placement courses as possible or additional academic courses
Review Bright Futures Scholarship requirements:
- Check web site Florida Bright Futures for details of awards, requirements and classes accepted
- Florida Medallion Scholarship (3.0 weighted g.p.a./ 970 SAT or 20 ACT for 75% tuition at a public Florida institution or equivalent at a private Florida college)
- Florida Academic Scholarship (3.5 weighted g.p.a./1270 SAT or 28 ACT for 100% tuition at a public Florida institution or equivalent at a private Florida college)
- Four years of English
- Three years of social studies
- Three years of mathematics
- Three years of science
- Two years of foreign language
- 75 community service hours for Florida Academic Scholarships
