Academy Overview

American Academy is located on the same campus as American Heritage. The Academy is designed to help students with average to gifted intelligence who are functioning below grade level. In many cases these students have mild to moderate learning disabilities. In the Academy we help students "learn how to learn." Small class sizes are the first step. From first to sixth grade there are no more than 12 children with a teacher, a full time teacher assistant and a masters level reading instructor who accompanies the curriculum. All teachers are learning disabled certified, teaching in the field of their bachelors, masters or doctorate degrees. Lower school students at the Academy receive highly individualized instruction. The academic curriculum is "tailor made" according to each child's particular strengths and weaknesses.

Students in first through third grade have a wide range of specialty teachers. Each student will have art, music, media center, computer, investigative science and physical education. For students in fourth through sixth grade choice is given according to their "fine arts wheel." Six choices are given: drawing, painting, ceramics, drama, choral music or band. The student chooses his or her favorite subject three times a week and second choice twice a week. In addition, students in fourth through sixth grade have investigative science lab, computer, and media center once a week.

96% of Academy graduates went on to colleges and universities worldwide in 1999.

Students in grades seven through twelve have a maximum of twelve to fourteen classmates. The curriculum and surroundings are specifically designed to create the best learning atmosphere. If the student has difficulties in reading, he/she may work daily with a masters level reading teacher on an individual basis.

In addition, parent teacher communication is one of the most important points of American Academy. This communication is reinforced and encouraged in all grades by weekly progress reports, scheduled parent teacher conferences, interim reports, quarterly report cards, and an open-door policy to discuss the special needs of your child.

Extra curricular activities include 29 athletic teams with a no-cut policy, several clubs and associations, and one of the best fine arts departments in the state. Our after school activities are meant to boost leadership qualities and self esteem, and to provide a meaningful school experience. At American Academy we give hope to academically challenged students. Over 80% of Academy graduates go on to colleges and universities worldwide.
